Hello, nog season

· Andrew

NogLog is open. It's the place to find, log, rate and share eggnog: every carton on the shelf, every dairy's seasonal batch, every bar's boozy nog and every homemade recipe. Each December you get to know what to drink, and to remember what you thought of it.

Why a logbook for eggnog

Eggnog has a six-week season. Dozens of brands turn up in November, most of us buy one or two, we argue about them, and by January it's all forgotten. Magazines run an annual taste test, but that's one editor's palate, and it disappears into the archive. We wanted something that gets better every season because the people drinking it build it.

It started with a conversation at work about how much fun an app devoted entirely to eggnog would be. A friend and coworker, Kevin, came up with the name. The rest of the story is on the Why NogLog page.

What you can do today

  • Find a nog. Browse the catalog without an account and see what people think. Where there aren't enough ratings yet, we say so rather than invent a number.
  • Log it in seconds. Pick the nog, tap the stars, done. Notes, a photo and flavor tags are there if you want them.
  • Keep your seasons. Every log belongs to an eggnog year, so "was last year's better?" finally has an answer.
  • Share a recipe. Homemade crowd, you are welcome here.

If you want the details, how ratings work explains the stars, the ten labels from "Nope." to "Nog of the gods", and exactly how the numbers are counted.

Free, and fair about it

NogLog is free, has no ads and doesn't track you. It runs on value-for-value: if it's worth something to you, give something back, whether that's your time, your talent or a little treasure. There's more on the support page, and no pop-ups.

The apps

The Android and iOS apps have been submitted to the stores. They'll be there as soon as the stores say yes, and the apps page will always have the current links.

Your turn

Log what you're drinking. If a nog you love isn't in the catalog, add it; a person will give it a quick look and it goes live. Spotted a mistake? Suggest a correction. Every nog added makes the next person's search better.

Cheers, and happy nog season.
